BÖNI Knurling Wheels

Forming or cutting?
We get often asked whether the knurling should be formed or
cut.
The
use of cutting wheels is recommended for the following materials:
Shortcutting
materials
such
as brass,
bronze, casting, aluminum alloys, plastics as well as materials with high firmness.
The
use of rolling wheels is recommended for:
Steel and steel tube
Forming wheel BO

After many experiments, we have succeeded in developing a new rolling wheel that offers some significant advantages. The existing knurling wheels only have one facet at the edges, where they do most of the work. Especially for straight knurls, this shape is not ideal for forming the knurl on the workpiece. A facet acts like a surface that has to push the material for the “teeth” of the knurl forward. In the new BO-shape knurling wheel, the teeth are radiused towards the center of the wheel on both sides. This results in much better formation of the tooth contour on the workpiece. The transitions are rounded, and not sharp-edged. The cylindric centre section of the wheel provides clean guidance on the workpiece, so that a truly straight knurl is generated. The new rolling wheel BO from Böni is very versatile. It can be used to roll 0° straight, 30° diamond and 45° cross knurls. The BO rolling wheel is manufactured in two sizes.

Cutting wheels SA, SL und SR

The cutting wheel has sharp-edged teeth. In order to machine the part by cutting, the wheel has to be at an angle to the axis of rotation. To produce a cross or diamond knurl, the SA shape of cutting wheel and the corresponding tool are needed. For a straight knurl, the SR and or SL cutting wheel and the corresponding tool are needed.

Corner forming wheel

The EA shape corner knurling wheel has a ground facet, and a recess in one face for a screw head, so that it can be fastened to a bearing shaft. Thanks to this recess, the screw head is countersunk, making it possible to knurl up to about 0.8 mm from a corner (a collar). The EBO shape knurling wheel has a toothed radius, like the BO shape rolling wheel (see above). In addition, the EBO wheel possesses a recess in one face for a screw head, so that it can be fastened to a bearing shaft. With this wheel, it is possible to knurl up to 1.2mm from a corner (a collar).
